me: i want them to take away the oscar they gave to hurt locker and give both social network and king's speech oscars
Stephanie Blue: haha, nice
me: this is like the year that forrest gump was up again shawshank and pulp fiction
it's like
Stephanie Blue: or like Gone with the Wind up against the Wizard of Oz?
me: why wasn't there a single good film made in the whole of 2009 and then like four in 2010?
exactly!
that's exactly my point
Stephanie Blue: yeah so i did a little research, Ebert picked True Grit, Tribune critic picked Social Network, and King's Speech won the SAG
so, who knows!?!?
me: by fluke of release date the films that most deserve recognition will be lost in history as nominees instead of winners while shitty-ass nothing pieces of rubbish win on "off years"
bologna!
Stephanie Blue: exacrtly
me: SAG is the best, most consistent identifier of who will get the oscar in the past 11 years
Stephanie Blue: do you get reception on your phone in the basement? I can call you at key moments
yes, I agree
me: if social network wins movie i'll be okay. i just won't have colin firth losing in his own category
Stephanie Blue: oh he'll win for sure
i just don't think Social Network as a film compares to Kings Speech
i get that's it's an important story from the last decade blah blah
but i still liked King's Speech better. but i haven't seen all the nominees either
me: it was well done; well cast, good direction, music, good script, but king's speech has all those things plus an emotional component and better acting from the necessary ensemble
but the oscars aren't about the ensemble like the SAG awards are
they are about individual achievements, which is why a director will win and the film he directed will lose and two completely other films will win for performaces and screenplay
it's like...so compartmentalized
i like to look at the whole film
and in that aspect kings speech, obviously
Stephanie Blue: wow you are so good at evaluating them!
obviously.
me: aww
thank you sister
